This resource is for students in upper key stage 2 and key stage 3, and it relates to the aspects of the National Curriculum that focus on developing an understanding of techniques, using these and evaluating them, then ultimately producing a creative response.

Contextual Summary


The task links to specific aspects of the tree-climbing environment, notably Appley Park and the landscape there. This resource has pre- visit, on-site and post-visit elements. It is expected that teachers could complete this work as a stand-alone project as part of their trip to the Isle of Wight and Goodleaf Tree Climbing.

Learning Opportunities

Pre-Visit

Students complete their research into tree and landscape artists, noting down any styles, techniques or compositions they appreciate.

On-Site

Students complete their sketches using aspects of Appley park they are interested in.

Post-Visit

Completion in class of students’ creative artwork inspired by trees or landscape in Appley Park.

Learning Outcomes

Students will have developed a knowledge and understanding of artists’ work in relation to trees and landscapes, becoming more critical. They will have experimented with, and used techniques of their choosing to represent the landscape at Appley Park. Students will produce their piece of transitional artwork inspired by their research and based on their sketches undertaken at the park before or after their Goodleaf climb.
