Shanklin (historically "Chynklyng") is a popular seaside resort on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight with an easily accessible sandy shoreline and impressive cliffs.

The town is at a much higher level than the beach and esplanade, where visitor attractions such as restaurants, arcades and crazy golf courses await. At the northern end a steep hairpin bend feeds a road and footpath down to the seafront, and the southern end can be reached via Shanklin Chine. In the middle is a unique "Cliff Lift" elevator.

The area was extensively damaged during World War II hence the architecture along the seafront in particular being a mix of styles and ages.

Beach Visit - Shanklin

Stunning Golden Beach

Shanklin Beach is a one of the Isle of Wight’s best known stretches of golden sands, which backs onto a traditional English seafront promenade. The beach is located on the south east coast of the Isle of Wight, with groynes keeping the sand in place and a high sea wall and pavement promenade between the sea and the Esplanade.

Shanklin Esplanade has all the traditional British seaside attractions you'd expect and more: a large amusement arcade with crazy golf, bowling, go-karting and even an indoor golf for rainy days.

Parts of the beach are accessible at all states of the tide. If it's fun and games you're after, we can also book a specialist company that provides age-appropriate activities on the beach, book a game of crazy golf, or arrange for a surfing or paddleboarding session.

Shanklin

Keats and PLUTO

Shanklin is a popular seaside resort in the east of the Island. Famous for its sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, chocolate-box Old Village shops and hotels, plus a wooded ravine in Shanklin Chine.

The town's most famous resident was poet John Keats. The town also featured heavily in Operation PLUTO ("Pipe Line Under The Ocean"), an austentacious World War II effort to supply fuel to allied forces in northern France which undoubtedly contributed to the success of D-Day. Parts of the apparatus can still be seen in the chine and at other Island locations.
