This is a pre-visit and on-site resource, designed around the students’ ferry journey to the island. Students will identify what makes a mammal, bird or fish identifiable, then will spot species they may see when on their ferry trip.

Contextual Summary


This resource is for students in key stage 1. It links to the ‘Animals’ part of the Science National Curriculum. Students will be identifying species that live in or around the Solent.

  • To identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, birds and mammals
  • To understand that different characteristics can be used to help identify them
  • To begin to classify different organisms into groups

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to name a variety of things that can be found in the local and wider environment. They may be able to recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.
