The resource is a series of tasks that encourage students to identify and engage with the historical objects and items on display at the museum, and to analyse and interpret their usefulness, purpose and impact . Students have to interpret an original Isle of Wight network map and so are employing useful life skills that crossover to other subject areas, such as Maths and Geography.
This enables students to practise their interpretation skills whilst engaging with historical items and aspects of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The task is relevant to students in key stage 1 & 2.
Questions have been chosen because they link with core History skills as required at these key stages.
It is suggested to teachers that students undertake some research the background of the railway, in particular the history of the Isle of Wight railway network and its demise, as a class pre-learning activity. Students should be keen to practise responding to the resource questions.
Completion of the History resource/s linked to this document
Follow-up tasks could include a whole class discussion about the responses to the questions, groups presenting back their collated ideas to the class, or compounding learning by developing further skills, using more challenging questions
Students will be able to investigate the historical aspects of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway by interpreting the questions and challenges, answering the questions, and recording their responses.
