School Trips to: Isle of Wight

Meet the ED Squirrel scurry

Throughout Education Destination's massive catalogue of Isle of Wight curriculum-related worksheets and resources you will find a scurry of squirrels (or is it a dray?) brightening up the materials and helping guide young minds through the activities therein.

ED the Squirrel (so named after our initials - Education Destination) comes in many guises and appears in the majority of our resources, especially those targeted at younger users in Key Stage 1 through Key Stage 3. ED has many expressions and there are EDs of different ages to help identify with readers.

ED is a red squirrel as this is the type we have predominantly here on the Isle of Wight. If you're lucky you may spot a couple on your next school trip here - especially in our ancient woodlands. Want us to organise some time squirrel-hunting? We can take you to the most likely spots depending on the time of year!

ED is also used throughout our website to add a touch of humour and keep our visitors smiling. How many have you spotted today?

Here's some of our favourite ED poses:

ED Squirrel as an Artist

ED the Artist
Doesn't he look cute in his paint-covered smock and beret?! ED the Artist can be found gracing our various Art & Design worksheets and resources.

ED Searching
This version of ED sees him looking all around for clues or information, and is a visual prompt on many of our resources to show students that they need to look up from their worksheets or mobile phones to find out something useful or interesting.

ED Squirrel happy

Happy ED
This version of ED highlights fun aspects of resources, or celebrates completion of tasks. He was modelled on a photograph we took during one of our very first hosted Isle of Wight school trips of one particular youngster who was delighted to find that their accommodation provider had a zipwire in the garden!

ED in PPE
Highlighting the importance of PPE, or signalling observational or potentially hazardous tasks particularly in science-focused learning resources, here ED is shown in a lab coat and protective goggles.

ED Squirrel teaching maths

Teacher ED
Here, ED is in "teacher" mode, introducing maths or numeracy tasks and telling students that it's OK to use a calculator or app to help complete a task.

ED in PPE
Sometimes a task requires a student to pause and focus on a piece of text. We think this ED incarnation demonstrates this perfectly!

ED Squirrel reading a book
ED Squirrel as Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock ED
Who better than a famous fictional detective to highlight a quiz or interpretative task? Here's ED in his deerstalker using his magnifying glass to search for information.

Cap'n ED
A lot of our resources feature the sea (we are after all surrounded by the stuff!) or are based on one of the Isle of Wight ferries. Cap'n ED therefore is a worthy accompaniment.
